Phase One: 1980-2000 - Evolution or Decay?
In 1980, there were countless communist, socialists and leftist groups in the UK, within and outside the Labour Party and trade unions, with significant support from sections of the public. By 2000, most of these groups had dissolved, broke apart, or atrophied; the Labour Party had abandoned socialism and the unionist movement was stagnated.
What happened here? Was it a natural shift in the political landscape, or were there more direct causes? Did the activists abandon the movement, or did it collapse because of internal tensions? In this phase of the project, I am talking to people involved in leftist politics from 1980-2000, to discover what really happened, from the perspective of those most impacted
BLOHP is a project for the young leftists of today to learn about their predecessors, and help them develop new ideas about the past (and future) of their movements. This is an active project, so we welcome input and submissions.
About
Tom Sankey: Head Researcher
Tom Sankey is a public historian, currently studying at Royal Holloway University. He set up the British Left Oral History Project due to his interest in the political history of his country, and the lack of education on leftist history that centres leftist perspectives. If you are interested in taking part in the project, please contact the British Left Oral History Project via one of the means below. We are interested in talking to leftist activists, politicians and organisers who were active from 1980-2000, especially those not directly tied to the parlimentary Labour Party.
